Patch Dump Request (PDR) Commands
Manufacturer-specific SysEx trigger commands sent from a computer host to prompt a synthesizer to initiate an automated memory dump.
# Mathematical Formula & Architecture
Logic SpecificationExample DX7 Voice Dump Request: F0 43 20 00 F7 (F0=SysEx, 43=Yamaha, 20=Substatus/Channel 1, 00=Dump Voice Format, F7=EOX).
def build_dx7_dump_request(channel: int = 0) -> bytes:
"""Generates 1-click SysEx Dump Request for Yamaha DX7 32-Voice Internal Bank."""
return bytes([0xF0, 0x43, 0x20 | channel, 0x09, 0xF7])
def build_juno106_manual_request_note() -> str:
return "Note: Roland Juno-106 does not support automated PDR commands; initiate dump via front-panel MANUAL button."
# Deep Technical Analysis & Historical Context
To backup a synthesizer without touching its front panel, librarian software transmits a Patch Dump Request (PDR) command. When the target instrument receives this command on its matching MIDI channel and device ID, its internal operating system halts playback, assembles the requested memory registers, packages them into SysEx framing with valid checksums, and transmits the bank back to the computer. While synths like the Yamaha DX7, Oberheim Matrix-1000, and Roland D-50 support automated PDR triggers, older or simpler boards (like the Roland Juno-106) lack a PDR parser and require the user to press a physical button (such as WRITE or MANUAL) to push the dump.
Common Studio Pitfall & Hardware Hazard
Sending a Dump Request with the wrong MIDI channel or Device ID will result in complete silence from the synth with no error indication.

# Frequently Asked Engineering Questions
Can Bipluk trigger automated dumps for my synth?
Yes! For all synths that support PDR (DX7, Matrix-1000, D-50, Wavestation, MicroKorg), Bipluk's Web MIDI engine sends the exact handshake command with 1 click.
