Released in 1987 to rival the DX7, the Roland D-50 introduced Linear Arithmetic (LA) synthesis. LA synthesis combined short PCM acoustic samples (like the transient strike of a bell or flute chuff) with digital subtractive synthesis. This hybrid approach created rich, complex, and evolving textures like 'Fantasia' and 'Digital Native Dance'.

"The 'Digital Native Dance' patch was so popular that a TV studio once sued a local supermarket, claiming the supermarket's checkout scanners were ripping off the patch's opening transient click. The lawsuit was dismissed when it was revealed both the scanner and the patch used the exact same 8-bit PCM click sample from a public library."

# Memory Protect & Setup Routine

Follow these precise steps on your physical hardware unit to bypass memory protection and allow SysEx backup operations:

Before transferring Linear Arithmetic patches, the D-50 requires memory protect to be turned off.

  1. Press and hold the TUNE/FUNCTION button.
  2. While holding, press the MIDI button.
  3. Use the joystick or value buttons to navigate to the Protect setting.
  4. Change the memory protect setting to OFF.
  5. Ensure that the Exclu (System Exclusive) setting is set to ON so the synth accepts MIDI dumps.

Your D-50 is now ready for patch transfers.
