The Oberheim Matrix-1000 (1988) packed 1,000 analog synth patches into a single rack space. Driven by CEM3396 chips, it features Oberheim's powerful matrix modulation routing system. Because the front panel has no editing controls, managing user RAM banks and designing patches is completely dependent on external MIDI SysEx editors.

# Memory Protect & Setup Routine

Follow these precise steps on your physical hardware unit to bypass memory protection and allow SysEx backup operations:

The Matrix-1000 has banks 0-199 available as RAM (user rewritable), while 200-999 are ROM (read-only). You must enable memory protect off for the RAM banks.

Press the Select button until the Bank/Protect LED is lit.
Press the + or - buttons to toggle the memory protect status. The display should read U F (Unprotected) instead of P F (Protected).
Ensure you are writing to a user bank (000-199).

Your Matrix-1000 can now have its user banks overwritten via SysEx.
