# History & Legacy

Released in 1988, the Korg M1 is widely recognized as the first defining digital music workstation, outselling even the Yamaha DX7. It combined multi-sampled PCM ROM waveforms with built-in digital effects, sequencer, and drum sounds, letting composers produce complete tracks on a single machine. The M1's signature 'Universe' pad, 'Piano 16'' preset, and house organ patch have shaped electronic and pop music for decades.

# Lore & Studio Anecdotes

"The iconic 'Universe' preset pad was allegedly created when a sound designer accidentally left a microphone active next to a boiling kettle while sample-looping a choir waveform. The resulting steam hiss blended so perfectly with the digital PCM wave that Korg engineers declared it a 'transcendental acoustic event' and kept it."

# Memory Protect & Setup Routine

Follow these precise steps on your physical hardware unit to bypass memory protection and allow SysEx backup operations:

The Korg M1 protects its internal programs and combinations by default. You must disable this in the Global menu.

  1. Press the GLOBAL button to enter the Global mode.
  2. Press the PAGE + button until you reach Page 5 (MIDI GLOBAL).
  3. Use the cursor buttons and value slider to set MIDI EXA (Exclusive Allow) to ENA (Enabled).
  4. Press the PAGE + button to reach Page 6 (MEMORY PROTECT).
  5. Set both PROG (Program) and COMBI (Combination) to OFF.

Your Korg M1 can now receive SysEx patch banks.
