Oberheim Matrix Modulation Architecture
The semi-modular digital modulation routing system pioneered in the Oberheim Matrix-6 and Matrix-1000 allowing arbitrary source-to-destination routing.
# Mathematical Formula & Architecture
Logic SpecificationModulation Formula: Destination_Value = Base_Value + Sum(Source[i] * Amount[i]). Up to 10 simultaneous virtual patch cables.
Oberheim Matrix Row Definition:
Source: [01: LFO1, 02: LFO2, 03: ENV1, 04: ENV2, 05: Velocity, 06: Aftertouch, ...]
Destination: [01: DCO1 Pitch, 02: DCO1 Wave, 03: DCO2 Pitch, 08: VCF Cutoff, ...]
Amount: Range -63 to +63 (Bipolar 7-bit scaling)
# Deep Technical Analysis & Historical Context
Before 1985, analog polyphonic synthesizers had rigid, hard-wired modulation routes: LFO 1 always modulated filter cutoff or pitch via dedicated knobs. Oberheim revolutionized sound design with the Matrix-6 by introducing 'Matrix Modulation'—an open-ended digital matrix virtualizing the patch cords of large modular systems. Players could route any of 20 modulation sources (such as Ramp generators, Envelopes, Keyboard Tracking, Velocity, or Aftertouch) to any of 32 modulation destinations with bipolar depth (-63 to +63). Because setting up these routings via the 2-digit LED of the Matrix-1000 rack is painful, Bipluk provides instant SysEx patch editing and visualization over Web MIDI.
Common Studio Pitfall & Hardware Hazard
Transmitting heavy continuous controller streams to Matrix-6 modulation destinations over MIDI DIN will instantly overload its 8051 microprocessor, resulting in delayed note triggers.

# Frequently Asked Engineering Questions
Can you edit Matrix-1000 patches from the front panel?
No. The Matrix-1000 is a pure preset player from the front panel. Modifying its parameters and matrix modulation routings requires external SysEx commands sent over MIDI.
