Ground Loops & 5mA Current Loop Signaling

The electronic principle of current-driven signaling over voltage-driven signaling that shields MIDI networks from audio ground buzz.

# Mathematical Formula & Architecture

Logic Specification
Loop Current I = (V_cc - V_diode) / (R_source + R_sink + R_cable) ≈ (5.0V - 1.2V) / (220Ω + 220Ω) ≈ 8.6 mA (nominal 5mA standard).
Implementation Reference:
Current-Loop Logic States:
Logic '0' (Space / Mark Active): Current flows through loop (approx 5mA). Optocoupler LED ON.
Logic '1' (Mark / Idle State): No current flows (0mA). Optocoupler LED OFF.
Line Idle state between bytes is continuously held at Logic '1' (0mA current).

# Deep Technical Analysis & Historical Context

When connecting multiple instruments powered by different AC wall circuits in a recording studio, minute differences in electrical ground potential (often several volts of AC difference) create parasitic ground currents flowing along audio cable shields, resulting in loud 50Hz/60Hz hum. Dave Smith and the MIDI design committee solved this in 1983 by making MIDI a current loop rather than a voltage bus (like RS-232). Signals are transmitted as binary pulses of current (5mA) flowing through a floating loop of wire. Because the loop floats completely above ground at the receiver's optocoupler, ground potential differences between different racks or rooms have zero electronic path to generate audible interference.

Common Studio Pitfall & Hardware Hazard

Connecting non-standard MIDI cables that bridge Pin 2 ground directly between transmitter and receiver defeats the entire galvanic isolation system, instantly injecting computer USB buzz into your analog synth audio.

# Frequently Asked Engineering Questions

Why is the MIDI line idle state 0mA instead of 5mA?

Keeping the line at 0mA when no data is being transmitted conserves power and reduces thermal stress on optocoupler LEDs in large studio setups.
