# History & Legacy

The Sequential Circuits Prophet-600, released in late 1982, holds the historic distinction of being the first commercial synthesizer equipped with MIDI. It features 6 analog voices utilizing Curtis CEM3340 oscillators and CEM3372 filter chips. Today, many users install the custom GliGli firmware upgrade to improve envelope speeds and add full SysEx control.

# Lore & Studio Anecdotes

"During the historic first-ever public demonstration of MIDI between the Prophet-600 and a Roland Jupiter-6 in 1983, the connection initially failed because someone plugged the MIDI cable into a headphone jack. The loud feedback loop was mistaken by the audience for a cutting-edge avant-garde solo, resulting in a standing ovation."

# Memory Protect & Setup Routine

Follow these precise steps on your physical hardware unit to bypass memory protection and allow SysEx backup operations:

The Prophet-600 (both stock and GliGli-modded) requires memory protect to be disabled before receiving SysEx.

  1. Locate the MEMORY PROTECT switch on the front panel (often near the preset/keypad section).
  2. Flick the switch to the OFF position.
  3. If you are using the GliGli firmware, press the TUNE button and use the keypad to ensure MIDI SysEx RX is enabled according to the GliGli manual.

Your Prophet-600 is now ready to receive presets.
