Understanding Roland SRAM Architecture

The Roland Juno-106 uses CMOS static RAM chips (μPD444) to store patch data. These memory registers require a continuous feed of 2.0V or higher. When the internal battery drops below this threshold, the memory cells lose their state, corrupting the stored patches.

A common issue is the rear-panel Protect Switch. When set to 'ON', it applies a pull-up voltage to the SRAM's write-enable pin. This prevents the microprocessor from modifying the patch library, displaying a blinking write-protection error on the front screen.

Remember this

Replacing a battery wipes the SRAM. Your display will show garbage characters immediately after battery replacement. This is normal. You must load a clean SysEx patch bank to restore the memory registers to a readable state.
